The short answer

Most people get Social Security on a Wednesday set by their birthday: born on the 1st–10th, the second Wednesday of the month; the 11th–20th, the third Wednesday; the 21st–31st, the fourth Wednesday. If you started before May 1997, or you get both Social Security and SSI, it's the 3rd. SSI alone comes on the 1st. When that day is a weekend or a holiday, the money comes the business day before.

Social Security doesn’t pay everyone on the same day. Your day depends on when you started getting benefits and on a birthday. Find yours below, then print a calendar to keep by the phone.

Every date on this page comes from Social Security’s own published schedule. Our calendars are checked against it day by day.

Two payments in one month? Plan before you spend it

When the 1st of a month is a weekend or a holiday, SSI for that month arrives at the end of the month before. That can look like two payments in one month, followed by a month with none:

  • October 2026: SSI on October 1, then November’s SSI on Friday, October 30 (November 1 is a Sunday). No SSI payment arrives in November.
  • December 31, 2026: January 2027’s SSI arrives early, and so does January’s 3rd-of-the-month payment, because January 1 is New Year’s Day and January 3 is a Sunday.
  • 2027: May’s SSI comes on April 30, August’s on July 30, and January 2028’s on December 30.

The money is the same; only the day moves. Budget the early payment for the month it belongs to.

If your payment doesn’t arrive

Social Security’s advice: if you don’t get your payment on the expected date, allow three more mailing days before contacting them.

After that, contact Social Security using the numbers and links on the Contact Us page of ssa.gov. Type the address yourself or use a bookmark, instead of a number or link from a call, text or email.

Under each year’s table, Print the dates prints just that year on one sheet, with the reasons for any early payments. Circle your column with a pen, and you won’t have to look it up again.
